Overview

Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic in collaboration with Emirates Cardiac Society, Saudi Heart Association, Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology and Dubai Health Authority are pleased to provide an educational event for physicians and all health care providers who specialize in the treatment of cardiovascular disease: The 2nd Annual Case Based Approach to Controversies in Cardiovascular Disease.

This educational activity will review the current progress, controversies and importantly, appropriateness of the latest innovations and clinical trials impacting the fields of cardiovascular medicine and surgery and heighten awareness and clinical practice skills of health care professionals who diagnose and treat patients in this population. Through a knowledgeable approach to these innovations and use of current evidence based therapies, providers will be able to incorporate the most up-to-date research into their clinical practice and, thus, optimize patient outcomes.

A Case Based Approach to Controversies in Cardiovascular Disease will include:

  • Treatment of valvular heart disease
  • Current management of multivessel CAD
  • Management of dyslipidemia
  • Current status and future options for AF management
  • The role of transcatheter valves in the treatment of structural heart disease
  • Utilizing imaging to guide cost effective CV care
  • Patient selection and timing of CRT-D and ICD
  • Innovations in management heart failure

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this Summit, the participant will be able to do the following:

  • Assess recent clinical trials on the use of novel anticoagulants and the potential impact on this at-risk population
  • Summarize the advances and innovations in diagnostic/prognostic testing in nuclear cardiology
  • Recognize appropriate patient selection criteria when selecting cardiac imaging tests
  • Explain the role of HDL in overall cardiovascular risk reduction and how HDL-C particle size may relate to lipid metabolism
  • Review the role of cardiac resynchronization therapy in managing patients with heart failure
  • Discuss strategies for evaluating and treating patients with symptomatic AF
  • Describe the need for accurate diagnosis and risk stratification of stable CAD patients, and interpret findings from COURAGE and BARI 2D.
  • Review the potential application of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in the treatment of patients with aortic stenosis
  • Examine clinical trial results of novel oral anticoagulants used in the prevention of AF-related stroke
  • Discuss how new and emerging stent technologies have evolved and their potential to improve patient outcomes in CAD
  • Summarize state-of-the-art treatment for aortic and peripheral vascular disease
